The “Great List”

A site called “Acclaimed Music” is home to probably the most scientifically crafted list of the best albums of all time. They state: “The albums are ranked by a weighted rating based on the average rating and the number of ratings from a selection of music magazines and webzines.”

It contains lists of “the best” by decade, going all the way back to the year 1900 and containing selections from 2011. Yes, it’s a monster, and the complete list has over 4,700 entries. If you’ve got the time, click on the link above, but if you just want a snapshot the top 100 is below for you to peruse at your leisure. Also, the great music site “POP MATTERS” has an ongoing series called COUNTERBALANCE, whereby two funny and smart writers on the site each take a side (for or against) each record on the list and debate for a while. They’re at #55 (the Stone Roses debut), and have vowed to debate every single one of the top 3,000. At the rate of one every 2 weeks it’ll take them approximately 115.4 years to complete their task. I’ll be 158 years old by the time they get to #3,000, which is Television Personalities 1981 album, “…and Don’t The Kids Just Love It”.
